Ulrich Mohr will succeed Matthias Kählig and will be the future managing director of Kählig Antriebstechnik GmbH (KAG) from 1 January 2015. The shareholder Matthias Kählig will stay full-time in the company and will be in charge of the formation of the product management and development of new products.
The graduate industrial engineer Ulrich Mohr has worked as EDP and organisational consultant after his studies at the IDS Professor Scheer GmbH. From 1993 he focused on controlling, finances, EDP, organisation and logistics. As business unit and commercial manager he operated mainly in small and middle-sized companies within the international network all over Germany. Since 2002 he has worked in the management of Viscom AG and Wagner Group amongst others in the region of Hanover.
Matthias Kählig, who has been the sole shareholder of KAG since 2003, knows Mr Mohr from previous consulting projects and is delighted to have gained such an experienced managing director for KAG.

KAG presents itself as innovative at the SPS trade fair in Nuremberg

Hannover, 19.11.2014. In hall 1 at the SPS IPC Drives 2014, KAG presents among others forward-looking electronics, which allow a high degree of individualisation for the customers. “With our offer, we address especially anyone interested from the field of medical technology, agricultural economy, door automation as well as from the leisure sector”, explains André Harstrick, the Marketing and Sales Director of KAG. The company for engine and drive technology presents itself both flexible and innovative on these fields. “Our specialists develop the suitable solution for practically every request”, tells Harstrick. A highlight on KAG’s exhibition stand is for example the result of a cooperation project, at which KAG took part as a drive specialist: the prototype of a knee orthosis drive. It works by means of an active electrical drive, reduces the energy demand when walking and contributes in this way to increase significantly the mobility. Also in the field of applications, KAG shows innovating spirit again. Visitors can get informed about the different options of the new CAN bus capable electronics i42, i42dc and i63, as well as various other application possibilities. Already now, a strong interest is shown in the new brushless motors of the series ECMa63, which are likewise exhibited at the SPS this time. For those who want to convince themselves in addition of the flexible applications of KAG Antriebstechnik, it will be best to let themselves demonstrate by the sales representatives from Hannover how easily tailor-made products by KAG can be found now using the new complete catalogue and the KAG Drive Configurator. “For us, it is important to know which solutions our customers need – and of course to be informed about the market situation”, says Harstrick. “The SPS offers a stage for this purpose.”

A new compact drive with integrated CAN bus control

From track to track more efficiency in agricultural technology

In order to optimize the dosage of the fertiliser or the seeds, KAG has developed a new drive with integrated CAN bus control. Meanwhile, the combination of motor and gearbox with integrated electronics has successfully passed all testing phases. Currently, the pilot series is in the field test. Thus, a KAG DC motor with a universal multi-master field bus system is available for the first time, where the software can be adapted individually for each manufacturer with little effort – and this motor thrills with many other advantages.

Today, newest technologies allow an ever faster and more and more efficient work in the agricultural sector. KAG supports this progress with drives that are already established in the international agricultural technology and works with full stretch on innovative developments in order to accelerate work processes and to reduce the energy demand at the same time.

Custom-made solution

“Our current project is about a gear motor with integrated CAN bus control, which is responsible for the efficient dosing of the seeds in a singe-grain sowing machine”, explains Andreas Schwerdtfeger, graduate engineer and developer at Kählig Antriebstechnik GmbH. “The objective is that the work tool puts the grain of seed on the field to the exact position within a very short time.” This automation process is carried out by evaluation of sensors and by special (motor) software, which communicates with the superordinated “job computers”.

“What is special about our new gear motor with i42DC is that the integrated CAN bus control is based on the international standardised protocol EN 50325-4, and that we can integrate customer requests into the software. In this way, besides the custom-made motor (+gear) solution with, for instance, a high IP protection and/or stainless steel shaft, further possibilities for the adaptation to customer requirements are available.”

This universal electronics, serving as an interface, can be adapted by means of Software modifications to the customizable control of each manufacturer. Thus, the seed placement on the field becomes significantly more precise, fast and efficient.

Simple assembly tanks to Plug and Play

“Another big advantage of the electrification in agricultural machinery for this project is, besides the precise approach to each individual seed row, the modular fixation by ‘Plug and Play'”. “The drive can be assembled to the customer’s application directly out of the shipping box: push in the plug and get started! Previous hydraulic motors could contaminate the ground with oil in the event of a fault. In case that an electrical motor should ever fail, a simple exchange is a matter of minutes. Our drives have a very high quality and thus are extremely reliable. We set ourselves apart by the precise manufacturing of individual components, and so we realise a high accuracy of fit of the components, which supports the function of sealing elements and so protects the motor against the penetration of water”, tells Schwerdtfeger. The corrosion resistance, which is already very high (for example, motor housings are not chromed but realised in cathodic dip painting (CDP)) can still be increased by varnishing upon customer request.

From hydro wizard to the ECMa63

The base of the innovative water streaming system hydro wizard63 is the stator lamination from the new ECMa63. The hydro wizard is used to generate laminar flows in aquariums, ponds or other bodies of water. The energy efficient movement of water is a basic function. This elminates dead zones in the water. With the controller it is possible to generate wave simulations, in which both wave height and length can be adjusted. The pump can simulate rivers, tides, surge and waves. Adding oxygen or CO2 can be controlled efficiently. The hydro wizard is designed for use in fresh- and saltwater.

For this particular product that is the origin of the revised versions of the brushless motor series ECM63, called ECMa63 in future. The "a" stands for a new winding technology that was at the end of last year first introduced for the hydro wizard. Now this technology will be available in the next year for the industrial engine range.

Function of the hydro wizard:
The movement of the impeller generates an area of low pressure, which pulls the water from the back through the basket and pushes it out the front over the fins of the stator.

 

Development of the prototype of an active drive system for prostheses and orthoses

Generally, prostheses replacing the function of the missing extremities are used for patient-centred care of amputations at the extremities. However, in particular the motor abilities can only be restored with extensive limitations so far. This is especially caused by the fact that the muscular activity cannot be replaced yet and consequently the active movement of joints, for example, cannot be simulated.
In this project, approaches for this problem are tested, an actively powered, energy-efficient drive unit which can be controlled according to the situation is developed and a prototype for a lower leg prosthesis with an actively powered knee joint is designed and tested.
Several partial developments are performed in a syndicate consisting of six partners and supported by a potential system manufacturer. The ISW intends to develop anticipating control algorithms for discontinuous boundary conditions.
For this purpose, the mechanical and electric components of the actively powered knee prosthesis that are currently being developed are described in a simulation model. In addition to a realistic illustration of the motor, further factors such as losses in the gear as well as the real incline of the knee angle or the knee moment were examined.
By use of the model, a controller has been developed which optimally complies with the previously prepared requirements for controlling the knee angle.
At the same time, faults, such as a volatile change of the load torque are balanced smoothly. The controller also dynamically adapts to changing load profiles.
A further step within the project is the development of an integrable hardware platform for controlling and adjusting the prosthesis as well as the implementation of the controller at this platform.
A prototype of the knee prosthesis with the anticipating control will be designed and commissioned until the end of the project.
